Only in a city as creative as Portland could a bookstore be a landmark. There are more than 80 miles of routes, each suiting different levels of ability among the luscious wooded area. ![]() Around 15 minutes from Downtown, park up and hike along one of the various trails. Stretching over 5,200 acres to the west of central Portland, Forest Park lies among the Tualatin Mountains. Around 15 minutes’ drive from Downtown, the French Renaissance-style mansion hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions displaying photographs, artifacts and art about life in Portland from the 19 th century onwards. Get a real sense of Portland’s boom over the last century in this mansion-turned museum overlooking the city at more than 1,000 feet above sea level. African and Asian elephants are the real stars of the show, with their giant enclosure and playful nature. The oldest zoo in the country’s West opened in 1888, growing from a private collection to a home for more than 2,600 exotic creatures today. Oregon ZooĪ ten-minute drive west of Downtown and within Washington Park is Oregon Zoo. More than 45,000 artworks from ancient to contemporary periods – including Native American pieces from the Pacific Coast and the works of old European masters like Rembrandt – fill its galleries. Portland Art Museum spans two historic buildings, which are connected by a subterranean gallery. Join the I-5 North and follow it for most of the journey. How to get from Portland Airport to Downtown Burnside Street cuts across the center of Portland, from east to west over the Willamette River, through Downtown and out into the hills near Arlington Heights.Interstate 205 (I-205) splits off from the I-5 just south of Portland and runs up through the city’s east, crossing Columbia River onto Government Island and rejoining the I-5 at Salmon Creek going north.Interstate 5 (I-5) runs up from south of the city, crossing the Willamette River just below Downtown and heads north all the way to Seattle .Roads and freeways Main routes in Portland Between Denney Road and Interstate 5 can get particularly busy during these times, so organize your driving outside these hours for a more relaxed experience, where possible. Rush hour in Portland starts at 7:00am until 9:00am, then runs from around 3:00pm to 6:30pm. Sky bridges on level four connect the short-term car park to the terminal, while two tunnels join the long-term car park. More than 3,000 short and long-term parking spots are available at PDX Airport.These are either coin-operated or use a SmartMeter, which accepts prepaid, credit and debit cards. In central Portland, you can find more than 15,000 on-street metered parking spaces.More than 300 retailers will validate your parking with a qualifying purchase. There are 4,000 spaces downtown in the city-run SmartPark garages, including 4th and Yamhill (97204), 3rd and Alder (97204), and 10th and Yamhill (97205).
